‘America’s Historical Newspapers’ debuts in library

What is “America’s Historical Newspapers”?

America’s Historical Newspapers is a research database package comprising the facsimile content of thousands of local American newspapers from the colonial period through the year 2000, designed as a way for students to do primary source research on selected periods and issues in American history.  Students can pick a subject from a timeline of selected subjects, or do a search based on keywords, to access a set of relevant articles from contemporary local newspapers and other primary sources of the period in question.  Full image of these articles is provided.  It is a student friendly research tool yielding first hand historical texts written by those actually living through it.  It is a great out-of-the-box solution for teachers introducing real historical research to undergraduates.

Where can I access “America’s Historical Newspapers”?

Go to the library home page and on the right hand menu column under “Find Journal Articles” click on ”Search for Articles”.  This action will bring up another web page of “Article Databases by Subject”.  Click on the link that says “Newspapers”.  You will be brought to the newspapers page on which you will see listed the link taking you to “America’s Historical Newspapers”.  When you click on this link from off campus you will be asked to supply your network userid and password to authenticate you to this database.  If you do not have a network userid and password, you may obtain one here.
